RALLY! What is Rally?
AKC Rally is the new dog sport taking the nation by storm, a successful stepping stone from the AKC Canine Good Citizen program to the world of obedience or agility. Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the rally judge. The judge tells the handler to begin, and the canine team proceeds at their own pace through a course of designated stations (10-20, depending on the level). Each of these stations has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience. While perfect heel position is not required, there should be a sense of teamwork between the dog and handler. Unlimited communication from the handler to the dog is to be encouraged! Unless otherwise specified in the Rally Regulations, handlers are permitted to talk, praise, encourage, clap their hands, pat their legs or use any verbal means of encouragement. Multiple commands and/or signals using one or both arms and hands are allowed. Rally offers both the dogs and handlers an experience that is fun and energizing. While Rally was designed with the pet owner in mind, but it can still be very challenging for those who enjoy higher levels of competition. Who Can Do Rally?Anybody! (Note: entries are limited to 100 dogs this year.) To be eligible to compete in AKC Rally trials, a dog must be: (1) Registered with AKC or listed with the AKC Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) program, or a Foundation Stock Service (FSS) recorded breed that meets the eligibility requirements for competition; and, (2) 6 months of age or older. Rally makes a great entry-level class for both obedience and agility. It is a wonderful sport for older dogs who have been "retired" from other dog sports and their handlers are looking for a fun activity to share with their veteran dog. Levels of CompetitionThere are 3 levels: Novice - the first level for those just getting started in competition. All exercises (10-15 stations) are performed with the dog on leash. Advanced - the second level, which includes more difficult exercises (12-17 stations, including a jump) and is performed off-leash. Excellent - third level and the most challenging. Exercises (15-20 stations) are performed off-leash. |
